Home to the 3rd Infantry Division

Fort Stewart

Civilians are welcome to visit Fort Stewart and explore its attractions, notably the 3rd Infantry Division Museum. This museum offers over 14,000 square feet of exhibits, including interactive galleries detailing the evolution from Camp Stewart to Fort Stewart, the history of the 3rd Infantry Division, and unit portraits. Future expansions aim to feature an Airfields and Aviation gallery and displays of historical military vehicles. Admission is free, and the museum operates Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

To access Fort Stewart, visitors without Department of Defense identification must obtain a visitor pass. This involves undergoing a background check at the Visitor Control Center (VCC), located at Gate 1. The VCC is open seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

It’s advisable to allow extra time for this process before your visit.

Beyond the museum, Fort Stewart offers various recreational facilities accessible to civilians, such as the Marne Bowling Center, Taylors Creek Golf Course, and Club Stewart. Non-DoD ID cardholders over the age of 18 can request an extended visitor’s pass to enjoy these amenities.

City of Midway

Midway, Georgia, is officially designated as a city, having been incorporated in 1925.

Despite its modest size, Midway offers a variety of attractions that highlight its rich history and natural beauty.

  • Midway Museum: This raised cottage-style museum showcases artifacts, documents, and furnishings from Georgia’s colonial period through the Civil War, offering insights into the region’s past.

Home to the Henry Ford Plantation

Richmond Hill

Once the winter retreat of Henry and Clara Ford, the Ford Plantation, a 7,000-square-foot Greek Revival mansion, completed in 1939, now serves as the centerpiece of The Ford Field & River Club, a private residential community. While the estate itself is not open to the general public, its historical significance is a testament to Ford’s legacy in the region.

 

Richmond Hill History Museum: Housed in a building constructed by Henry and Clara Ford in 1940, originally serving as a kindergarten for local children, the museum now showcases artifacts and exhibits detailing the area’s history and Ford’s contributions. Visitors can explore displays highlighting the transformation of Ways Station into Richmond Hill and Ford’s role in the community’s development. The museum is located at 11460 Ford Avenue.
